TCS 6L80/6L90 1-2-3-4 Billet Piston

If you’re a repeat builder of GM 6L80 or 6L90 transmissions, you’re well aware the 1-2-3-4 clutch piston is a component prone to failing. It’s often the case that the factory piston cracks due to cantilevered stress. A billet piston is a necessary performance upgrade in any high line pressure, tuned, and other performance modified applications. It can also be an inexpensive preventative upgrade to put to rest the longevity concerns of the OE cast part.

Why the OE Piston Fails

As the OE cast piston “breaks in”, it develops an uneven wear pattern where it contacts the forward/Direct drum. It commonly hangs up on the bore and spline region of the drum during application, resulting in increasingly uneven application of apply pressure. The cantilevered loads stress the cast aluminum and over time, the material fails and develops fatigue cracks. When Inspecting an OE piston for wear and tear; look for hairline cracking between the bore and OD of the piston. Also have a look for wear on the wall of the bore. Uneven wear here signals that cantilevered load we mentioned earlier.
