Performance Applications

Power adders including simple performance tunes are not friendly to the internals of a stock 6R80 unit. The 6R140, sold in Fords heavy duty lineup, is a similar unit with upgraded components to handle factory higher torque specs. These transmissions are used in heavy towing, diesel drag racing, and sled pulling applications.

To help these transmissions perform more reliably at ever-changing power and torque levels, aftermarket internals are required.

Common Failure Points and Parts Solutions

Below are some of the more common issues seen with the 6R80 and 6R140 transmissions, and how our Ford performance transmission products address them.

Intermediate Shaft Failures (6R80 and 6R140)

  • Condition: Broken Intermediate shaft during the 3-4 shift. This is often the first component to fail in a performance application.
  • Cause: Factory shaft material cannot withstand increased power levels and performance upgrades.
  • Our Solutions: Billet intermediate shafts with significantly increased torsional and yield strength.
    • 6R80 Intermediate Shaft: Manufactured from 300M steel. A necessity for builds over 600HP.
    • 6R140 Intermediate Shaft & Hub: Shaft is manufactured from 300M steel, and the hub is made from 4140 HTSR steel. Featuring a gun-drilled center bore for a superior surface finish – eliminating stress risers caused when conventionally drilling. This intermediate shaft is recommended for high-performance, extreme towing, and commercial use builds.

Clutch Capacity, Heat, and Shift Quality

  • Condition: Burnt clutch stack, flare or overlap on upshifts
  • Cause: Insufficient OEM friction surface area, leading to poor heat management
  • Our Solutions: Performance rebuild kits with premium frictions (Alto G3 and GPZ), matched steels and higher quality seals. These kits are an absolute necessity for any performance build.
